was quite frank in admitting Chennai Super Kings' long-term agenda after their recent nine-wicket defeat to Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede Stadium on Sunday, April 20. He revealed that if at all CSK don't make it to the playoffs this year, the Men in Yellow would want to use the remainder of their games to shape an established playing XI for next season.
"With all the games in front of us that we are supposed to win, we will just take it one game at a time. And if we lose a few, what will be important for us [is] to get the right combination for next year. We don't want too many players getting changed. So, I think what will be important is to try and qualify. But if not, get a secured eleven for the next year and come back strong," shared Dhoni in an official conversation with the official broadcasters post the conclusion of the game.
There will no stone left unturned looking for players for next year: FlemingCSK's head coach, Stephen Fleming, echoed Dhoni’s statement while also emphasising that their top priority for the time being remained securing a spot in the playoffs.
"We are realistic about the position that we are in. But, there will no stone left unturned looking for players for next year, combinations for next year, and we'll see it as an opportunity. Not a great opportunity, because we want to be at the pointy end of the competition, but if it works out that there's no chance of us getting through, we'll certainly make the most of it," stated Fleming, as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.
The Men in Yellow's deflating loss to MI marked the franchise's sixth loss this season. have only been able to win two games in IPL 2025. They have an uphill task ahead for them to have any probability of making it to the top four of the competition.
