Causes of Gas in the Stomach: Gas formation and bloating in the stomach after eating food are very common problems, which almost everyone faces at some time or another. Often, we believe that this problem is caused only by junk food or unhealthy eating. However, this is not entirely true. Famous gastroenterologist and liver specialist Dr. Saurabh Sethi has explained three major reasons behind this problem in his Instagram video.

According to Dr. Sethi, trained at prestigious institutions like AIIMS, Harvard, and Stanford, the cause of gas formation in the stomach is not only our diet, but also some health conditions. It is very important to understand these reasons so that this problem can be dealt with properly. Let us know in this article what three major reasons Dr. Sethi has mentioned.

Food and drink

According to Dr. Sethi, the first reason for gas formation in the stomach is our food and drink. He explains that certain types of carbohydrates, such as lactose (in milk), fructose (in fruits), fructans (in wheat and other grains), and sorbitol (in many fruits), are not fully digested in our digestive system.

These indigestible carbohydrates reach the intestines and start to ferment, producing gas and causing bloating. This means that sometimes bloating can be caused not just by junk food, but also by a healthy diet, especially if your body is unable to digest these carbohydrates.

IBS or functional dyspepsia

Another major cause of gas in the stomach can be conditions like IBS or functional dyspepsia. IBS is a chronic disease that affects the large intestine, causing abdominal cramps, pain, bloating and gas problems. On the other hand, functional dyspepsia causes pain and discomfort in the upper part of the stomach.

In both these conditions, the movement of the digestive system becomes abnormal, causing gas to get trapped in the stomach or intestines, and the stomach feels bloated.

Constipation

People often consider constipation a common problem, but it is a major cause of gas formation in the stomach. According to Dr. Sethi, when constipation occurs, the stool remains stagnant in the intestines for a very long time. During this time, the bacteria present in the intestines keep fermenting that stool, which produces more gas.

This stagnant gas and the pressure of the stool make the stomach feel bloated and can also cause pain.

What to do?

Only by understanding these three major causes can we deal with the problem of gas and bloating. If you are constantly having this problem, then pay attention to your diet and identify the foods that do not suit you. Also improve your lifestyle so that constipation does not occur. If the problem persists, consult a doctor immediately, as it may be a sign of an internal disease.
