While many parents also complain that the child sleeps till late in the morning and wakes up with great difficulty for school. On these complaints, doctors say that the sleep of children varies at different ages. As the child grows up, his need for sleep changes.
The guidelines issued by the Indian Academy of Pediatrics for parents state that young children's sleep is interrupted frequently, so they need more time to sleep. The need for sleep keeps decreasing from newborn to adulthood, but it is important to get enough sleep for good health.
This much sleep is necessary
Age Minimum sleep Sleep range
0-3 months 11 hours 14-17 hours
4-11 months 10 hours 12-15 hours
1-2 years 9 hours 11-14 hours
3-5 years 8 hours 10-13 hours
6-13 years 7 hours 9-11 hours
14-17 years 7 hours 8-10 hours
The guidelines say that this sleep chart states that children should sleep at least this much at this age, but if your child sleeps even for this many hours as per the mentioned sleep range, then there is no need to panic or get worried. For example, if your 5-year-old child sleeps for even 13 hours, then it is a good night's sleep for him.

Which children are smart?
Generally, in Indian homes, 8-9 hours of sleep is considered sufficient, and if someone sleeps more than this, then it is associated with laziness or other things. Even 10-12-year-old children who go to school are often scolded for sleeping for more than 8 hours. However, guidelines say that if your child sleeps less, their health can be harmed. Children who do not get enough sleep according to their age often feel sleepy during the day, their nature and behavior start becoming irritable, and they have difficulty in learning anything. Even their academic performance deteriorates. Such children are not able to absorb things with much concentration in school. Not only this, the risk of accidents has also been seen to be higher in young people who sleep less.
So if your child is sleeping more than 8 hours daily and is sleeping in the sleep range according to age, then it is good for both his physical and mental growth. A child who sleeps more is also able to perform better in extra activities or sports.
