Inter dash Barcelona's dream
Inter Milan sealed their place in the Champions League final after a thrilling 4-3 extra-time victory over Barcelona, clinching a 7-6 win on aggregate in a semi-final packed with drama. Substitute Davide Frattesi emerged as the hero, netting the decisive goal in the 99th minute, while goalkeeper Yann Sommer delivered a stellar performance with several crucial saves to keep Inter’s dream alive.
The Italian giants took full control in the first half, with Lautaro Martínez opening the scoring on a counterattack in the 21st minute. Just before halftime, Hakan Çalhanoğlu doubled the lead from the penalty spot after a VAR review deemed Pau Cubarsí's tackle on Martínez to be a foul, despite initial appearances suggesting a clean challenge.
Barcelona roared back in the second half, shifting the momentum with quick-fire goals from Eric Garcia and Dani Olmo to draw level. Although Sommer made a series of important stops to hold Inter together, Raphinha appeared to have completed the comeback when he tapped in what seemed to be the winner in the 87th minute.
However, Inter refused to back down. In the dying seconds of stoppage time, Denzel Dumfries floated a cross into the box, finding veteran Francesco Acerbi, who lashed home a first-time finish to level the tie once again his first European goal in a two-decade-long career.
With the match heading into extra time, Marcus Thuram created a moment of magic on the right wing and delivered the ball to Frattesi, who calmly curled it into the bottom corner, sparking wild celebrations among the home supporters.
Barcelona, who were chasing a treble after already lifting the Copa del Rey, saw their European hopes dashed. They now turn their attention to La Liga, where they hold a four-point lead over Real Madrid with four matches remaining, including a crucial El Clásico clash on Sunday.
Inter will now await the winner of the other semifinal between Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal, with the French side carrying a 1-0 advantage into the second leg.
