American in UK shares three phrases she's 'going to miss' most when she returns

An American woman living in the UK has shared a few phrases she’s really “going to miss” when she moves back to the US. Though the UK and our friends across the pond share the same language, there are many linguistic nuances and cultural differences between both nations.

One American woman lives in the north of England with her British husband. But after years of life on this side of the Atlantic, their time in the UK is due to come to an end. The couple are currently raising their children in Leeds, but will be making the move back to the US later this year.

Lisa Dollan, who posts on social media under the handle @yorkshirepeach, is originally from Georgia and is getting ready to return - and there are several quintessentially British phrases she’s really going to miss.

  • Couple's pet tarantula disappears for a year and then something unexpected happens

Taking to TikTok, Lisa began: “Phrases I’m gonna miss when I move back home to Georgia. Right. ‘I can’t be a**ed’. That means nothing where I’m from.

“Nobody’s gonna have a clue what I’m talking about. ‘Oh, do you wanna go to the store?’ ‘I can’t be a**ed’. What am I gonna say now?

“‘Can’t be bothered’? Nobody really uses ‘bothered’ that way, either. ‘I just plain don’t want to’,” Lisa then laughed and grimaced at this potential replacement phrase.

Another “phrase” the mum is going to miss is “just replying to everything with ‘innit’”. She then gave examples including “the weather’s bad” and “gosh this food is good” and imitated someone agreeing to each by saying “innit”.

Summarising the portmanteau’s appeal, the mum explained: “It’s a one-word response, no other words are needed.”

Finally, Lisa shared her appreciation for “y’alright” and its ease and simplicity. She then said: “I’ve got to go back to saying ‘what you doing?’ Oh my gosh.

“How strange is that gonna be for me? ‘Hey girl, what you doing?’ It seems like a weirdo thing to ask, doesn’t it? That’s what I have to go back to.”

In the comments section, fellow TikTok users were keen to share their thoughts. One person said: “Take the phrases to Georgia with you...teach them Yorkshireisms!!”

Another agreed: “take the lingo with you and educate folks” while a third said: “Take them with you, teach the world our ways”.

A fourth commented: “‘I can’t be a**ed.....that means nothing where I come from!’ sounded so heartbroken! Make it mean something. Start the trend over there!”

Someone else suggested: “Just don’t move back.”

Another said: “Keep the phrases and convert your friends/family”.

And another said: “We’re so boring here!! Keep it up and maybe it’ll catch on!”

One TikTok user shared their similar experience: “I’ve been living in Ohio from Manchester UK for a year and half. I still talk the same. Everyone will get used to it.”
