When it comes to a good war series, there's no shortage of choice. However, sometimes it's the overlooked shows that impress viewers the most. And there is one BBC drama that is being called a "masterpiece" and "one of the best military shows ever created", despite not being hugely popular.
The show first aired in 2013 and ran for four series until 2020. It follows the life of a young British Army medic and the challenges she faces while on tour overseas. Many fans have recently rediscovered the series and are urging others to give it a try. One person said: "It's hands down one of the best series I've ever watched. I finished all four seasons in the short space of a week."
Another added: "There are a lot of war or military shows out there but this one is up there with some of the best."
A third wrote: "I came across this series by accident but I'm so glad that I did. It's one of the best military shows ever created."
Someone else said: "I've gotten addicted to this series. I love the storyline and the cast. One of my favourites in a long time."
The show is called Our Girl and was written by Tony Grounds. It started as a one-off special starring Lacey Turner as Molly Dawes, a young woman who joins the army to turn her life around.
Turner returned for the first series, but later left the show.
From series two, Michelle Keegan took over in a new role as Georgie Lane, who became the main character until the series ended.
Filming took place in several countries including South Africa, Kenya, Nepal, and Malaysia, with locations used to stand in for places like Afghanistan and Belize.
Unfortunately, the BBC confirmed in 2020 that Our Girl would not return for a fifth series after Keegan decided to step away from the role.
At the time, she said: "I've had the most incredible four years on the show and loved every second."
While critics had mixed views about later episodes, fans fell in love with the cast, action scenes, and storylines.
Many viewers say that the early series in particular were exceptional as they offered a more personal take on military life.
The idea for the show came after creator Tony Grounds visited a real army base and learned about a young woman who transformed during training.
He said he wanted to show how someone could find the one thing they're brilliant at, and build a story around it.
All four series of Our Girl are now available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
