NEW DELHI: CPI(M) has accused both the ruling Trinamool Congress ( TMC ) and the opposition BJP of engaging in " competitive communalism " and "colluding to orchestrate" the recent communal riots in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district.
The party alleged that the violence was politically motivated ahead of the 2026 assembly elections and demanded a judicial probe into the incident.
Addressing a mega rally of CPI(M)'s frontal organisations at the Brigade Parade Grounds, party state secretary and politburo member Mohammed Salim declared, "TMC and BJP colluded and orchestrated this violence. It's a shameful betrayal of the people's trust."
"We want a judicial probe into the Murshidabad riots to bring out the truth. The TMC and BJP are engaged in competitive communalism, which is nothing but a desperate ploy to shift focus from the real issues affecting the common people," Salim added.
Salim further alleged that the Murshidabad unrest was deliberately planned through cooperation between the BJP and TMC.
Further, speaking about the Centre's Waqf (Amendment) Act, Salim criticised the BJP-led national government for failing its citizens.
He noted that while the legislation sparked nationwide protests, riots occurred exclusively in Murshidabad, raising concerns.
"The law (Waqf Amendment Act) has been amended nationwide. There is a nationwide protest against it. But riots didn't take place anywhere except Murshidabad. That raises serious questions," he said.
The senior CPI(M) leader contended that the BJP and TMC were "helping each other" to create religious divisions among voters before the 2026 elections.
"Before the 2026 elections, the BJP and TMC are helping each other so that an atmosphere is created in the name of religion and people get divided," he alleged.
He criticised the central government's development agenda, stating that their “slogan of 'Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas' into 'Sabka Satyanash' (destruction of all)."
The CPI(M) demanded swift action against the perpetrators and called upon West Bengal's residents to stand united against the "dangerous politics of division".
