Commentary
  • Bangladesh will need to recognise that, apart from Craig Ervine and Sean Williams, the rest of the Zimbabwean lineup lacks much experience. If they can capitalise on the early morning assistance and make early breakthroughs, they could claw their way back into the match and shift the momentum in their favour. For Zimbabwe, the focus will be on starting steadily and taking it session by session as they look to press their advantage. It’s all set up for an intriguing Day 2. See you then. Cheers!
  • In response, Brian Bennett and Ben Curran showed great application and composure to tackle the early challenge posed by the Bangladeshi pacers. While the hosts’ pace attack lacked consistency, the Zimbabwean openers capitalised on the loose deliveries they encountered. Bennett and Curran stood firm, even as the light began to fade towards the end of the day to cap off a solid opening day for Zimbabwe on this tour.
  • Earlier in the day, under overcast skies, Bangladesh opted to bat first in what was a brave call given the conditions. Zimbabwe’s new-ball bowlers didn’t make the most of the early movement, often bowling too short, but things changed quickly once Victor Nyauchi was introduced. Mominul Haque, dropped on 0, made the most of his chance and fought his way to a gritty fifty, but that was the only real highlight in Bangladesh’s innings. From a solid position at 98/2, the hosts collapsed dramatically, losing 8 wickets for just 93 runs to be bundled out for 191.
  • It's official - STUMPS on Day 1! Zimbabwe take the opening day honours in the Sylhet Test and will be mighty pleased with how things unfolded, especially after being asked to bowl first. Bangladesh, on the other hand, will have plenty to reflect on. They have only themselves to blame for not applying themselves better with the bat and for lacking consistency with the ball in the final session.
  • UPDATE - 11.43 am GMT - The light meter is out, and the umpires have deemed that the light is not sufficient for play to continue. The players are heading off, and we now await an official update. Given how things look, it's unlikely that the light will improve enough for the players to return to the field, but for now, we wait.
